Use of the health insurance card
To receive healthcare services free of charge under the Health Insurance Plan in Québec, and to benefit from coverage under the Public Prescription Drug Insurance Plan, you must present your valid health insurance card.
To learn about the healthcare services covered by the Health Insurance Plan, please visit the website of the Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec.
How to renew your health insurance card
If you have a driver's licence
You can renew your driver's licence at the same time as your health insurance card, by virtue of a partnership between the Régie and the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec. You can do so in one step by going to a SAAQ service outlet. Two pieces of ID are required.
If you don't have a driver's licence
Individuals aged 14 years and over who are renewing their health insurance card only, may do so at a service outlet (such as a CLSC or an office of the Régie). Two pieces of ID are required (at least one with a photo). Some people, however, are exempt from this procedure. Please note that a photo cannot be taken at the CLSC.
